Back at work as a marine naturalist in Kachemak Bay. The humpbacks have not yet arrived, but the sea otters are such a delight it almost makes up for the whales’ absence.
The ocean is just like you: It gets by with a little kelp from its friends. Sea otters are not only the world’s cutest marine mammals, they’re also gardeners of coastal ecosystems, promoting plant and algal growth in the wake of their furious feasts on encroaching invertebrates. So first things first: Thank you sea otters for your ecosystem services—you’re worth every squee we can throw your way.
Flamboyant cuttlefish are master predators of the muck, walking about with tentacles at the ready to shoot out like a catapult and snatch passing prey. Check out our homegrown rainbow rhino cephalopods catching food in their exhibit!
