‘their speed makes them one of the ocean’s most fearsome predators’

This photo was taken by Gerardo Nasser during one of our
Pelagic Safari expeditions in Baja California Sur. Even though we focus on swimming with sharks, we are always on the lookout for any type of activity. This time we were lucky enough to encounter these agile predators feeding on a bait ball. In the open ocean you never know what to expect. That’s the beauty of these trips.Bahía Magdalena · December 2016

This cheery little butterflyfish has a big job. He’s charged with snacking on tiny nuisance aiptasia anemones that crop up on the rocks in the cuttlefish exhibit. Note: this little guy is very good at its job!

Holy mola! Don’t be fooled, this isn’t a baby whale – it’s a mola mola!
Also known as ocean sunfish, mola mola are the largest bony fish in the ocean. Despite their huge size (they can weigh more than 2,000 pounds!) these fish chow down on tiny prey like jellyfish. This mola mola was spotted in Gray’s Reef National Marine Sanctuary.
