A 12ft wide oceanic manta ray comes blasting out of the blue with an entourage of baitfish. Last July I was lucky enough to swim with these incredible creatures as they aggregated off the coast of the Yucatan peninsula, Mexico. The baitfish use the manta’s enormous body as a shield from aerial predators, allowing them to feed safely near the surface.

Typically measuring ~88 centimeters (but with recordings found up to 104 centimeters), the venomous golden cow-nose rays migrate in groups of up to 10,000 as they make their way towards their summer feeding grounds in the Gulf of Mexico.
It’s a baby bat ray brunch! Using plate-like teeth to grind and chew their sustainable seafood, these youngsters will grow quickly into their role as majestic sea flap flaps.
